How to choose a web design agency in the USA, UK or Australia

A practical checklist for choosing a web design agency: portfolio, process, platforms, ownership, support and the questions to ask before you sign.

Searching "best web design company" in any country returns hundreds of agencies that all say they're the best. This checklist helps you compare them on things you can check.

1. Look for work like yours

Ask for case studies in your industry or with your type of site: a store, a service business, an app. A good case study explains the problem, the agency's role and the result, not just screenshots. Ours, for example, cover a WordPress comic store and CGI videos for Godrej and Airyday.

2. Ask how they work

A clear process protects your budget. Expect research before design, wireframes before visuals, and reviews at each stage. Ask what you'll receive at the end of each step.

3. Check the platform recommendation

The agency should explain why they suggest WordPress, Shopify, a no-code tool or custom code for you, and what it will cost to run afterwards.

4. Confirm what you own

You should own your domain, your content, your design files and admin access to your site. Get this in writing.

5. Ask about speed, SEO and accessibility

Ask how they handle page speed, image optimisation, page titles and descriptions, structured data and mobile layouts. These decide how well your site shows up in search engines and AI assistants.

6. Agree support after launch

Sites need updates, security patches and small changes. Ask what maintenance includes, how requests are handled and what it costs.

7. Working across time zones

Many businesses in the USA, UK and Australia work with remote agencies. It works well when there are agreed meeting times, one main contact and shared project tracking. Ask how the agency handles this before you start.

Questions to ask on the first call

  • Which of your past projects is closest to mine?
  • What does each stage deliver, and when do I review it?
  • Which platform would you use for me, and why?
  • Who owns the design files, code and accounts?
  • What happens after launch?

Raise My Business has worked with clients in the USA, UK, Australia and India since 2021. If you'd like answers to these questions for your project, send us a message.
